The ability for the console to produce immersive and detailed 3D environments, the intuitiveness and precision of the analog control stick, and the overall feeling of observing and moving your character in a new dimension of space are on full display, but Pilotwings 64 is interesting enough in the overall concept that conveys these feelings that many gamers will be able to see the merits of it that go far beyond a simple tech demo. If youвЂ™ve never played the N64, Pilotwings is not what I nor anybody else would have you start with, but while the capabilities of the console were shown off perfectly well by Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64 does that just as clearly. Looking specifically at Pilotwings 64, the first question worth asking is whether or not it actually fulfilled its duty as a proper tech demo. With entries on the SNES, N64, and 3DS, each release in the Pilotwings series is fairly quiet and rarely holds any lasting notoriety, but this is really not due to the games themselves being subpar or uninteresting. But the N64 only has one other title that was available the day it was released in North America, from a pretty funky Nintendo series that holds a rather dubious distinction as a series that only gets made as a tech demo to show off new hardware. The N64 has what may just be the greatest launch title of all time in Super Mario 64, rivaled only by, well, other Mario games, and so as far as day one releases, it came out pretty strong. Launch titles are a tough batch of titles to critique, because they typically appear to operate on different principles than the rest of the games that come out after them.
